A chance to explore some of lifes simpler pleasures

March 10, 2021:

How much do you know about the gems which are hidden away off the beaten track around your neighbourhood? A whole lot more than you used to . . . if youre anything like me, that is.

Staying both physically and mentally healthy has been one of the biggest priorities, and challenges, during the past year of lockdowns.

But one of the real positives to come out of this quest has been a chance to get into the great outdoors.

For me, thats meant exploring parts of our locality that I previously either took for granted, or had no idea existed in the first place.

Ive always been a firm believer that theres no point stressing about the things you cant control, so while the scientists have been working to chart a path through the pandemic, Ive focused on my own wellbeing.

For the past few months, while weve been unable to travel out of our own areas, my routine has included a daily socially-distanced walk of typically around four or five miles, in addition to my normal exercise regime.

And what a treat it has been, unearthing many gems which I previously had no idea were virtually in my own back yard, despite living around here for many years.

It has well and truly whetted my appetite for yet more exploration.

Ive already extended my itinerary to do at least one longer weekly walk of about 10 miles and must say I feel in a much better physical shape as a result.

In the days before smartphone technology, we would have doubtless taken the easier, safer option and headed to the better-known local beauty spots, only to find hordes of others doing exactly the same.

But with a helping hand from apps like OS Maps, its possible to drill down to the most minute detail in the area around your own home, map out any number of new tracks to explore, and create your own walks.

A group of friends and I have been independently doing just this for some time now, sharing and discussing our findings. It has been an amazing experience, on so many levels.

Ive already created around a dozen different local routes, and theyre as beautiful and enchanting as anything youll find in the Peak District or Shropshire Hills, yet much further away from the crowds.

Hill Chorlton . . . Nursery Common . . . Swynnerton . . . Clowes Plantation . . . Hogshead Wood . . . Madeley Park . . . and various paths zig-zagging the Maer Hills. Just stunning scenery.

A group of business friends and I, who have been independently trying out the routes, have set up a Whatsapp walking group as a result, and Im sure that when the restrictions are finally lifted, we will be meeting up regularly to experience them together, and turning it into a real social gathering.

I have to say I cant wait. Its going to be a great way to meet new people, get to know some existing contacts in more detail, and drink in yet more of the beautiful fresh air.

Mental and physical therapy doesnt get much better than this, in my opinion. And it makes you think, who needs luxuries when you can access natures simplest pleasures, right here on the doorstep?

So my message is simple: Get yourselves out there, and make the most of the natural wonders of the world. Take it from me, theres some fantastic free therapy waiting for you&
